Ovaj box set od šest diskova prati sve prekretnice džez istorije 20. veka, kroz njegove legendarne inovatore i predstavnike kao što su Armstrong, Ellington, Basie, Parker, Gillespie, Davis, Hancock, Corea, Coltrane, i mnogi drugi. Kolekciju otvara Scott Joplinova Maple Leaf Rag iz 1899, a zatvara je Tomasz Stankova Suspended Night Variation VIII iz 2003. godine.
Ova zbirka je naslednica originalne Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz iz 1973, i na njoj se nalazi više od 80 procenata novog materijala – zastupljeno je nekoliko stotina muzičara na 111 kompozicija, a uz muziku ide i knjiga eseja od 200 strana, komentari kompozicija i istorijske fotografije. Šest diskova prati razvoj regtajma, njuorleanskog džeza, svinga, bi-bapa, hard-bapa, kula, modalnog i fri-džeza, fjužna, i drugih džez pravaca.
